WHICH BUILDING?
Moss Hotel resides in two buildings separated by a city block in Salamanca, Hobart. The buildings are of the same era having been built in 1841 and 1835 respectively and as evidenced by the Georgian facades of both. Each has a unique history and a unique feel, influenced by their location, orientation and form and subtle differences in treatment by architects Circa Morris Nunn. Whilst 25 is certainly more private and introspective, 39 is right at the very cross roads of the bustling Salamanca strip.
As with any inner-city neighbourhood, parking long-term can be tricky. Conveniently however, we maintain limited secure parking at a charge of $20 per day. Then the surrounding short-term metred parking is complemented by Montpellier Retreat Care Car Park, which is a four-minute walk away.
25 SALAMANCA PLACE
The warehouse was built by an ex-convict, Bernard Walford in 1841 as a store for grain and was subsequently used as a ship’s chandler, sail maker, preserving then jam company store, print shop and book store and is now your hidden sanctuary. 25 has great privacy being at the quieter end of Salamanca Place and our Pod Rooms are entirely internal, tucked inside the warehouse.

Upon development in 1832 by one of Tasmania’s notable colonists, Thomas Hewitt, the Hobart paper noted, “begging to acquaint his friends and the public, the publican has opened a retail wine and spirit store, on the New Wharf, Hobart Town, called The Whaler’s Return”. It has been a hotel ever since. 39’s position at the heart of Salamanca Place sees you only a few steps away from an array of dining and entertainment options.
